A senior conservation officer from the Countryside Council for Wales is urging gardeners to plant a native hedge in their garden as a low cost and low maintenance alternative to fencing.

In a short feature on hedges, Jonathan Neale outlines the history of the hedge in Wales and England and explains that by acting like mini woodlands and 'wildlife corridors' they are hugely beneficial to garden wildlife. The fashion for expensive and high maintenance garden fencing and the alien Leylandii evergreens seems to be waning somewhat. By replacing boundaries like these with a hedge of native species, we can at once cut our maintenance costs and benefit garden wildlife.
